Permanent support monitoring measurements in case of changes of the subsoil
Defrosting permafrost due to global warming or other underground changes can lead to instability in cable cars and restaurants. The Zermatt Bergbahnen have decided to monitor this problem with permanent GNSS and laser distance measurements on various cable car masts. Depending on the task, the sensors were attached to the mast foundations or the yoke.
In this way, the company increases the safety of their installations and can immediately initiate appropriate stabilisation measures in the event of any terrain or foundation movements. By knowing the exact, 4-hour updated 3D position of the masts, the maintenance of the cable cars can also be optimised, which can lead to cost savings.
